Benbecula Airport is a small airport located on Benbecula, an island in the Outer Hebrides. The islands boast wonderful, clean beaches and pristine coastal grasslands, which attract tourists throughout the year, and the surrounding countryside is a popular destination for outdoor pursuits and sports such as salmon fishing. The airport has been in operation since the late 1930s and provides a much needed transport link between the isles of Benbecula, North Uist and South Uist, and the Scottish mainland to the east.

Currently, three scheduled domestic routes operate to and from the airport connecting Benbecula and other Outer Hebridean islands to Glasgow, Barra and Stornoway. About 33,000 passengers pass through Benbecula Airport each year. The flights to Benbecula from Barra and Glasgow are operated by Loganair, a Flybe franchise and run on a daily basis (flights to Barra aren’t available at weekends); Highland Airways provide the service to and from Stornoway. Aside from these commercial flights the airport is also used for air ambulance services, cargo services and military flights linked t the nearby South Uist missile testing range. There is a heliport at the airport, which is served by PDG Helicopters. Flights from Benbecula to Barra are of particular note because of Barra’s famous beach runways; at present Barra is the only airport in Europe that has scheduled flights land on the beach.

The airport is close to the village of Balivanich; this is the main settlement on the Benbecula and is home to the islands council offices and bank. The airport is well integrated into the local transport system so visitors will find it easy to travel on to their final destination.
