Blackpool International Airport (IATA airport code BLK) is a small airport located in the northwest of England. The airport, previously called Squires Gate Airport, has been in use since 1909 for both private and commercial aviation; in fact, Blackpool International Airport is still a major centre for private and club aviation as well as flying instruction. The airport is currently a major hub for helicopter traffic travelling between the UK mainland and offshore gas facilities in the Irish Sea; it has also traditionally provided a link between the northwest of England and the Isle of Man. Over recent years, services provided by the airport have been slowly increasing; in 2007 the airport served over 550,000 customers travelling to destinations in the UK and Europe.

The airport isn’t a major hub for domestic travel; the only regular UK destinations serviced are Belfast and the Isle of Man. The main commercial services provided at Blackpool International are seasonal flights to the Spanish coast, Balearics and the Canary Islands (Alicante, Ibiza, Mahon, Malaga, Murcia, Palma and Tenerife). These routes are provided by Jet2.com; other destinations served by this airline include Geneva, Faro and Belfast. Other scheduled international and domestic services are provided by Aer Arann and manx2.com; Aer Arann provides a Blackpool to Dublin service and manx2.com operates the Isle of Man service as well as a route to Belfast. Several charter services operate from Blackpool International Airport. These routes are provided by Newmarket Holidays and Freedom Travel; destinations include Madeira, Alicante, Venice, Rome, Sorrento, Sardinia, Austria and Croatia. No long-haul services operate from the airport. Alternative airports close to Blackpool International include Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

The airport is located close to Blackpool town centre and is easy to reach by car and public transport. It is located at the end of the M55, which provides a link to the M6 and connects Blackpool International Airport with other UK destinations such as Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. It is easy to get to the centre of Blackpool by car from the airport, simply head west along the A5230 and the head north up the promenade joining the A584. Local bus services 1, 7, 11 and 16 all stop near the airport; the closest train station is Squires Gate, which has regular connections to Blackpool South and Preston.

Blackpool airport also now offer free parking for departing passengers. It has suffered some setbacks lately and is looking to increase it potential in attracting trade from nearby Liverpool and Manchester.

There is an article on my own blog which goes into further detail about the initiative.
