Cardiff International Airport is situated 12 miles west of the city of Cardiff in the village of Rhoose in the Vale of Glamorgan. It is the only airport in Wales offering scheduled flights to international locations. The bulk of flight activity at the airport comes from scheduled and charter carriers, particularly low-fare budget airlines flying to holiday hotspots. Out of the Cardiff Internationals top ten busiest routes in 2007, 6 were to Spanish destinations in the Mediterranean and Canary Islands. The most popular route at the airport is Cardiff to Amsterdam service, which served just over 225,000 passengers in 2007; other popular destinations include Faro, Dublin and Dalaman. Jersey was the most popular domestic destination in the same year. In total, there are flights from Cardiff International Airport to over 50 domestic and international destinations. As well as commercial activities, Cardiff International Airport is also an important hub for corporate and general aviation. A £100 million development plan is being put into action at the Cardiff International, the aim being to increase yearly passenger numbers to around 5 million by 2015. Part of the plan includes extending the existing terminal building, upgrading the facilities on offer and improving road access to the airport.

Bmibaby is the largest scheduled service operator at Cardiff International Airport and provides regular flights to European destinations such as Amsterdam, Barcelona, Belfast, Edinburgh, Faro, Jersey and Malaga. Flybe also has a large presence at the airport and is hoping to expand its services in the near future. Current destinations offered by the airline include Glasgow, Newcastle and Paris. Other scheduled operators currently providing flights to Cardiff International Airport are Aer Arann, Eastern Airways, Highland Airways, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Thomson Airways. Highland Airways provide an important air-link to Anglesey Airport in the North of Wales. Thomas Cook Airlines and Thomson Airways provide the largest range of charter flights from Cardiff International Airport; destinations served by these two airlines include Alicante, Bodrum, Corfu, Dalaman, Fuerteventura, Ibiza, Palma de Mallorca, Rhodes, Sharm el-Sheikh, Tenerife and Zakynthos. Air Malta, BH Air, Eurocypria Airlines and Onur Air are other charter airlines with a presence in Cardiff. During peak holiday times charter flights are available to destinations in North America and the Caribbean. Over 2.1 million passengers passed through the terminal building in 2007, making Cardiff International Airport the 19th busiest airport in the United Kingdom. Thanks to efficient public transport is easy to get to and from the airport from Cardiff city centre. The Rhoose Cardiff International Airport train station is the closest rail link to the airport. It is connected to the main terminal building via a regular and free shuttle bus service that departs hourly from the station.
