City of Derry Airport is located 7 miles northeast of Derry, close to the village of Eglinton in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Despite being in Northern Ireland, the airports close location to the Irish Republic border makes it an important transit hub for the Republic of Ireland. Currently, there are plans to improve the road link from the airport to the border with the aim drawing larger numbers of passengers. City of Derry Airport has seen passenger numbers grow rapidly over the last ten years as low-cost airlines increase the number of services on offer at the airfield. The airport began life as an RAF base during World War II; during the following decades there was some limited commercial activity at the airfield but it wasn’t until 1979 that scheduled flights began at the airport with a regular Derry to Glasgow service. This remained the airports sole commercial route for 10 years until a Derry to Manchester service began in 1989. Activities expanded greatly in 1999 with an increase in holiday charter flights and the arrival of low-cost airline Ryanair. The bulk of flight activity at the airport comes from scheduled flights to domestic destinations and seasonal charter flights to holiday locations in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands. A plan has recently been announced to expand the facilities available at the airport; amongst other ideas, a City of Derry Airport hotel is one of the suggestions being put forward.

Ryanair is the airline with the largest presence here and offers scheduled domestic flights to Birmingham, Glasgow-Prestwick, Liverpool, London-Luton and London-Stansted. Currently, the only other scheduled airline offering flights from City of Derry Airport is Aer Arann, which provides a daily service to Dublin. Seasonal charter services are provided by Thomson Airways, who during the holiday season offer flights from City of Derry Airport to locations such as Barcelona, Palma and Majorca. If you can’t find flights to City of Derry Airport or indeed from the airport to your destination of choice then the nearest alternatives are Belfast International Airport and George Best Belfast City Airport.

The airport is connected to Derry city centre by scheduled bus services. Full details of these services can be found on the airport website. Reaching the airport by car is straightforward as it lies on the main A2 Derry to Coleraine road; it is well sign posted from the city centre.
