Edinburgh Airport is located 5 miles west of the Edinburgh city centre close to the M8. It handled over 9 million passengers in 2007, making it the busiest airport in Scotland and the seventh busiest in the United Kingdom for that year. Currently there are over 25 airlines flying from Edinburgh Airport to over 90 international and domestic locations. The airport began life in 1915 during the First World War when, at the time, it was the northernmost air-defence in Britain. Commercial services started here in 1947, providing the Scottish capital with an air-link to London. The airport has grown steadily over the years and underwent redevelopment in 2005 and 2006. The bulk of air traffic at the airport comes from low-cost scheduled services to international destinations all over mainland Europe. During the summer months charter flights to holiday locations in Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey help boost passenger numbers at the airport. Edinburgh Airport’s top destination in 2007 was Amsterdam with Dublin coming in a relatively close second; other destinations in the top ten for that year were Paris, Frankfurt, Newark, Palma, Geneva, Malaga, Alicante and Barcelona (in descending order respectively). On average, there are around 350 take-offs and landings everyday at Edinburgh Airport.

Edinburgh Airport is an important hub for easyjet, flyglobespan and Ryanair. These airlines have the largest presence at the airport and provide scheduled flights from Edinburgh to destinations such as Belfast, Bristol, Berlin, Bratislava, Dubrovnik, Geneva, Krakow, London, Marseille, Munich, Nice, Pula, Rome and Stockholm. Flybe and Jet2.com also have a large presence at the airport, some of the destinations they fly to include Avignon, Bergerac, Cardiff, Exeter, Norwich, Pisa, Prague, Southampton and Venice. The other airlines currently providing scheduled flights from Edinburgh Airport are Aer Arann, Aer Lingus, Air France, bmi, bmibaby, British Airways, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Germanwings, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Scandinavian Airlines System. Continental Airlines, Delta AirlinesĀ  and Flyglobespan offer transatlantic flights to Newark, New York and Toronto-Hamilton respectively. Loganair provide important services to and from smaller Scottish destinations such as Inverness, Kirkwall, Lerwick, Sumburgh, Stornoway and Wick.

First Choice Airways and Monarch Airlines have the biggest charter presence at the airport. Amongst other destinations they provide seasonal flights from Edinburgh Airport to holiday hotspots such as Faro, Ibiza, Lanzarote, Menorca, Tenerife, Alicante, Fuerteventura, Bodrum, Tenerife and Zakynthos. Other charter airlines operating flights to Edinburgh (and from) are Air Europe, Air Transat, BH Air, Eurocypria Airlines, Iberworld, Karthago Airlines, Onur Air and Thomson Airways.
