Glasgow International Airport is situated about 7 miles west of central Glasgow close to the Renfrewshire towns of Paisley and Renfrew. Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the airport on the 27th of June 1966. It is currently the second busiest airport in Scotland; it handled over 8.7 million passengers in 2007, making it the 8th busiest airport in the UK. The airport is intended to be Scotland’s principle long-haul gateway and provides year-round flights to destinations in the US, Canada and Arabian Gulf. The bulk of the air traffic passing through the airport is generated by low-cost airlines making short-haul flights to domestic and European destinations, and charter flights bound for sunny locations around the Mediterranean during the holiday season. The airport also provides an important air link to destinations and communities in the Hebrides, Shetlands and Orkneys. In total around 30 airlines offer flights from Glasgow International Airport to over 80 domestic and international destinations. The airports top destination for 2007 was Tenerife, followed closely by Amsterdam; the other destinations in the top ten for 2007 were Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Dubai, Malaga, Dublin, Newark, Faro and Orlando (in descending order respectively). These destinations accounted for around 25% of all passenger numbers that year.

The airport is an important hub for easyjet, Flyglobespan and Loganair. Easyjet and Flyglobespan provide scheduled flights from Glasgow International Airport to destinations such as Barcelona, Berlin, Bristol, Calgary, Ibiza, Las Palmas, London, Orlando, Paris, Paphos, Toronto and Vancouver.
