Glasgow Prestwick Airport is in international airport located 32 miles southwest of Glasgow city centre. Due to its distance from Glasgow, the airport is sometimes referred to simply as Prestwick Airport. It handled over 2.4 million passengers in 2007, making it the 17th busiest airport in the UK that year, and the 4th busiest airport in Scotland after Edinburgh, Glasgow International and Aberdeen. Passenger numbers have risen considerably at the airport over the last ten years in conjunction with the rise in popularity of low-cost airlines. The bulk of air traffic at Glasgow Prestwick Airport comes from no-frills scheduled carriers flying to and from destinations over mainland Europe. A number of charter airlines operate from here during the summer months offering flights from Glasgow Prestwick Airport to holiday hotspots in Bulgaria and Turkey. Glasgow Prestwick Airport’s top destination in 2007 was Dublin with 235,576 passengers catching flights from Glasgow to the Irish capital. The airport is a major hub for low-cost carrier Ryanair. The airline has by far the largest presence at Glasgow Prestwick and offers regular scheduled flights to around 30 domestic and international destinations including Bournemouth, Budapest, Derry, Gothenburg, Krakow, Milan and Tenerife. Wizz Air is another scheduled airline serving the airport and currently offers flights between Glasgow Prestwick and Polish destinations such as Gdansk, Katowice, Poznan and Warsaw. Glasgow Prestwick Airport is currently the only airport in Scotland with its own railway station. It is connected to the terminal building by a covered walkway and is the most convenient way to travel between Glasgow, the airport, and other destinations. The train journey to and from central Glasgow takes about 40 minutes and Ryanair customers can receive up to a 50% discount on tickets between the station and any Scottish destination.
