Inverness Airport is an airport situated in the Scottish Highlands, 8 miles northeast of Inverness. It is an important air link for the north of Scotland and is major gateway for travel to the area. It handled just over 700,000 passenger in 2007, which made it the 5th busiest airport in Scotland and the 28th busiest in the UK overall for that year. International services have never really been a success at the airport so the vast majority of flights from Inverness travel to domestic destinations throughout England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The airport has traditionally been an important hub for connecting flights between lowland Scotland and the Orkney Islands, Shetland and the Hebrides.

Flybe and Easyjet both have a large presence at the airport. They offer regular scheduled flights from Inverness to Birmingham, Belfast, Bristol, London, Manchester and Southampton as well as seasonal services to Exeter and Jersey. Several Flybe routes operated by Loganair serve Edinburgh, Kirkwall, Stornoway and Sumburgh. Highland Airways provide flights from Inverness Airport to Benbecular and Stornoway, and Ryanair operates a service between Inverness and East Midlands airport. Lufthansa will begin an international service between Inverness and Dusseldorf in June 2009. Charter airlines offer flights from Inverness to holiday hotspots during the summer months. Air Europe provides services to Palma de Mallorca and Reus, while VLM Airlines offers flights to Jersey.

Travelling between Inverness Airport and the city centre is straightforward. A bus service runs between Inverness and the airport every half hour and taxis are also available outside the terminal building. A station on the Aberdeen to Inverness railway line has been proposed but until then the closest rail links are in Inverness and Nairn.

The airport is the main air hub for the north of Scotland so if you can’t find a flight to Inverness, then the nearest alternative is Aberdeen Airport, which is 83 miles away. Another option could be to fly to Edinburgh Airport and catch a connecting flight up to Inverness.
