Liverpool John Lennon Airport is located in the Speke area of Liverpool, about 7.5 miles southeast of the city centre. It has been one of Europe’s fastest growing airports over recent years. The ten years between 1997 and 2007 saw passenger numbers grow from 689,468 to 5,468,510; an increase of nearly 800%. It was the 12th busiest airport in the UK in 2007 and the 2nd busiest in the northwest after Manchester. Almost all the air traffic at the airport is generated by low-cost scheduled carriers offering flights from Liverpool to short-haul international destinations across Europe; there are only a few domestic services currently on offer and none of them are to destinations on the UK mainland. At present there are no long-haul services operating from Liverpool.
Ryanair has a large presence at the airport; it offers flights from Liverpool John Lennon Airport to European destinations such as Budapest, Cork, Faro, Kaunas, Krakow, Madrid, Milan, Nantes, Oslo, Paris, Porto, Riga, Rome, Salzburg, Seville, Stockholm and Turin. Numerous routes are also operated by easyjet; flights from Liverpool offered by the airline include Barcelona, Berlin, Dubrovnik, Geneva, Innsbruck, Jersey, Lisbon and Naples. Other scheduled airlines operating at the airport are Flybe, KLM and Wizz Air.
There isn’t a large amount of charter airline traffic at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. This is mainly due to the close proximity of Manchester Airport, which is a large base for charter flights. However, Thomson Airways are currently offering charter flights from Liverpool to Alicante and Palma de Mallorca (this is subject to change, so it is always best to check the airport website for more information).
Due to good transport links, travelling between the airport and Liverpool city centre is quick and simple. The airport doesn’t have a rail link but bus services run around the clock connecting the airport terminal with Liverpool Lime Street railway station and other destinations in the surrounding area. Full timetable details can be found on the airport website.
If you can’t find flights to Liverpool John Lennon Airport, the closest alternative airports are Blackpool and Manchester.
