London City Airport opened in 1987, its primary function being to serve the financial districts of London. The airport is actually located 7 miles to the east of the City of London on a former dockland site in the London Borough of Newham. The short single runway of the airport limits the type of airplane that can be used here, and as such services are primarily carried out using STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) aircraft. Close to 3.26 million passengers passed through the terminal building in 2008; a 12% increase on the previous year. These figures saw the airport become the 15th busiest airport in the UK that year and the 5th busiest serving the London area. It is the UK’s leading business airport and at present about 10 airlines offer flights from London City Airport to over 30 destinations across the UK and Europe. A transatlantic service from London City Airport to New York is scheduled to begin in September 2009.
British Airways, Air France and their operators have a large presence at the airport, they currently offer flights from London City Airport to domestic and international destinations such as Amsterdam. Barcelona, Dublin, Dundee, Geneva, Edinburgh, Eindhoven, Frankfurt, Lyon, Paris, Strasbourg, Warsaw and Zurich. Other airlines currently serving the airport include Aer Arran, Lufthansa, Luxair, Scandinavian Airlines Systems, Swiss International Air Lines and VLM Airlines. These airlines offer flights from London City Airport to financial and business destinations such as the Isle of Man, Dusseldorf, Munich, Berlin, Luxembourg, Copenhagen, Oslo, Stockholm, Basel, Jersey, Brussels and Rotterdam. Business aside, the airport is also popular in the winter months as some of the airlines offer flights to ski and winter sports destinations throughout Europe.
London City Airport has its own station on the Docklands Light Railway, keeping it well connected with London’s traditional and new financial districts. The station also provides easy access to the rest of London via the capitals extensive transport system, so whether you are travelling for business or for pleasure, getting to and from the airport won’t be a problem.
