London Stansted Airport handled over 23.5 million passengers in 2007, making it the 3rd busiest airport in the UK that year. Only London Heathrow and London Gatwick handled more. The airport is located in the county of Essex, about 30 miles northeast of Central London, and is one of the five international airports serving the capital.  Passenger numbers grew here considerably between 1997 and 2007 with the rise in popularity of budget air travel. London Stansted Airport is now a major hub for low-cost airlines flying to destinations throughout Europe; such services account for the majority of passenger flight activity at the airport. As well as domestic and European routes, there are some scheduled flights from London Stansted to destinations in Iceland, Israel, Malaysia, Morocco, Pakistan and Turkey.

The airport is a major operational base for no-frills airline Ryanair. Ryanair offer flights from London Stansted Airport to over 100 destinations across the UK, Europe and North Africa, including Adagir, Ancona, Balaton, Belfast, Beziers, Bratislava, Brindisi, Dublin, Eindhoven, Gothenburg, Ibiza, Kaunas, Krakow, Lourdes, Madrid, Rome, Seville, Tampere, Trieste and Venice. Easyjet offers a substantial number of services from London Stansted; some of the routes offered include Asturias, Bilbao, Copenhagen, Funchal, Ljubljana, Lyon and Tallinn. Air Berlin, Air Moldova, Cyprus Turkish Airways, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Pakistan International Airlines are some of the other scheduled airlines flying from London Stansted Airport.

Airlines offering seasonal charter flights from Stansted to popular holiday destinations include Thomas Cook Airlines, Thomson Airways, Onur Air and Titan Airways.

Although it is 30 miles north of Central London, London Stansted Airport is well connected to the capital. There is a train station below the airport terminal; the Stansted Express departs for London’s Liverpool St. station every 15 minutes and there are regular services to Cambridge and the Midlands. Regular bus services run to stops in London and other cities close by. Full transport details can be found on the airport website.

If you can’t find flights to London Stansted Airport, then the nearest alternative airport is London Luton. Other airports serving the city of London are Heathrow, Gatwick and London City Airport.
